Perform calibrated Ultrasound measurements

The program supports the Ultrasound Region Calibration Module (0018, 6011), and it is able to perform calibrated distance and area measurements in ultrasound DICOM files.

When the user selects the distance measurement tool, one or more rectangles appeared on the image. Every one of these rectangles represents a calibrated region. The active region has green color and inactive regions have red color. Within the active (green) region the mouse cursor has a cross shape, and within the inactive (red) region has an arrow shape. The user can perform measurements in the active region.

By clicking the right mouse button a pop-up menu is appeared, and allows the user to select the active region, and to view the region details.

By selecting the menu item "View US Region Details...", a dialog box appeared and displays the type, the units and the delta of the active region.

The user can easily check the accuracy of measurements by performing the same measurement with the ultrasound machine and with the program.

The program also allows calibrated area measurements, when the user has selected an area with a selection tool. The program by default uses for the calculations, the first calibrated region that has spatial units (cm, mm) in its Physical Delta X and Y, but the user can change this region with another.

Change the values of "Physical Delta X" and "Physical Delta Y"

The program allows the user to re-calibrate an Ultrasount region by editing the file's header.
Here is the step-by-step procedure:

  • open your file and from menu select "EditEdit Header"
The Ultrasount region calibration module is within the [0018, 6011] tag. Select this tag and press the "Edit Tag" button.

  • A new dialog box is appeared and allows you to change the values of "Physical Delta X" and "Physical Delta Y". If you have more than one regions in your file, select the desired region from "Block" combo box (different block = different region). Select one of these tags and press "Edit Tag" button.

  • From the new dialog box select the value, press "Edit Value" button and change the value.
Do the same for the other "Physical Delta"

  • Press OK in all dialog boxes and the region has now a new calibration.
The new calibration affects length measurements as well as area measurements.
